SP approves resolution expressing condolences to bereaved family of late National Artist Francisco Sionil Jose

The Provincial Board, during the Sangguniang Panlalawigan online session on January 24, approved Resolution No. 124-2022 expressing deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences to the bereaved family of the late National Artist Francisco Sionil Jose.

Born in the town of Rosales, the late renowned national artist has epitomized the story of Pangasinense’s excellence through literature. Some of his works include The God Stealer (1959), Waywaya (1979), Arbol de Fuego /Firetree (1980) and his essay: A Scenario for Philippine Resistance (1979). The most popular of which is the Rosales Saga which comprised of five novels: 1) Po-on, 2) The Pretenders, 3) My Brother, My Executioner, 4) Mass, and 5) Tree.

In 2004, the national government bestowed the National Artist Literature to F. Sionil Jose. Among the awards he also received were: Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in five different years, Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts, Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Centennial Awards, France’s Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres, and Pablo Neruda Centennial Award.

F. Sionil Jose’s contribution in the Philippine Literature was also recognized during the ASNA Balitok Award in the 430th Agew ng Pangasinan celebration on April 5, 2010.

The resolution states, “the unparalleled and invaluable accomplishments of the late Francisco Sionil Jose as literary icon had earned him the respect and pride of every Pangasinense and Filipino.”

Earlier, Governor Amado “Pogi” I. Espino III expressed his condolences to the bereaved family through his message  on January 8 which was posted on the official Facebook Page of the Province: “Thank you Manong Frankie for making Pangasinan a proud race. Thank you for inspiring us and for sharing your talent to the entire nation and the whole world.”

The late national artist peacefully joined the Creator at the age of 97 last January 6.
