Balungao : "balo tan ugao" How the town got its name is interesting. During the early part of the Spanish regime many people went to this town for sight seeing, and one from Manila on his way to Vigan happened to visit the place and to his surprise found many people milling around. This particular person asked one of the fellow visitors what was the matter that caused the presence of so many and the latter answered "Balo tan Ugao" meaning widow and a child in the English language. The truth was that one widow was looking for her lost child and in her frantic efforts caused so much emotions. The Manila visitor, however, did not understand what he was told and kept repeating the words Balungao. #
